Pinnacle Imaging Systems
The Pinnacle Imaging Systems is the next generation imaging platform that takes the science of the eye capturing light and applies it to the world of digital imaging, delivering unprecedented precision and image quality. The Pinnacle Imaging Systems methodology solves many long-standing digital imaging challenges and supports a novel imaging paradigm that offers new levels of efficiency and accuracy.
The Beyond RGB™ Color Model is the foundation of the Pinnacle Imaging Systems that describes all visible colors in terms of brightness, chroma, and hue. The Beyond RGB Model allows creating image editing algorithms with color integrity and reaching unprecedented compression rates.
Conventional digital imaging uses a classic model that is adapted to the characteristics of Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays and dates back to the advent of color television in 1950s. The sRGB system – nearly ubiquitous in all image information today – essentially represents direct control codes of the CRT screen. The irony is that the CRT monitors have become obsolete as devices but their technology continues to be an integral part of the conventional digital imaging model and workflow.
With the inevitable technical progress, human vision is the only constant. As the ultimate processor of visual data, human vision is a natural and intuitive foundation for the new digital color model, describing visual information in terms of how it is seen rather than how it may be reproduced.
Human Color Model
Based on human vision and independent from any imaging device, the Beyond RGB Model provides full human color range, high dynamic range, and tunable precision directly tied to the properties of human vision. At the creation of the Beyond RGB Model the primary goals were to make it precise, efficient and easy to use. The result is a color model that provides major advantages in image editing and archiving compared to traditional color models such as sRGB.
The Beyond RGB Model provides the highest degree of separation between brightness and chromatic (color) components of the visual data. When the brightness or contrast of the image is adjusted, the colors remain intact. When the colors are adjusted, the brightness and contrast remain intact.
Other known products, such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Photomatix, experience “color shifts” during the manipulation of brightness.
Full Color Gamut
Color gamut is the range of colors a particular model can represent. The Beyond RGB Model has a full, unclipped color gamut that can represent and operate with the complete human color range.
Unlike the Beyond RGB Model, the traditional models typically have limited gamuts that represent only part of the human color range. One of the common reasons behind the limited gamuts is that these models are tied to the limited color range of particular display hardware, such as the CRT display.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
Dynamic Range (DR) is the highest overall contrast that can be found in an image. A printed image has DR of maximum 200 due to limitations of ink. DR of a CRT monitor doesn’t exceed 300. DR of a natural scene can exceed 1,000,000, which is significantly greater than the capabilities of conventional CRT-based imagery. That is why the conventional imaging is also known as Low Dynamic Range.
High Dynamic Range is a technology operating with DR above 100,000. Space imaging and special settings can reach 1015.
Beyond RGB Model accommodates all types of natural and artificial scenes and operates with DR up to 1076.
Advanced Visualization Technique
The Beyond RGB Technology uses Advanced Visualization Technique to separate image editing and saving functions from the reproduction process. Image editing and saving is performed without any limitations to color range and dynamic range. For optimal reproduction, an image is converted into the color range and dynamic range of the display device and is optimized for the device’s color reproduction capabilities.
